Spanish poet Federico Garcia-Lorca wrote about the crystal lamps and green mirrors found in cabarets, and the riddle of guitars that flavored each performance.
He penned his first major work in tribute to cante jondo, deep song, a father to flamenco and a music stitched together by generations of globe-trotting gypsies making camp in southern Spain.
Fast forward six centuries. Early June. Eight musicians known as Ojos de Brujo pump a packed Tokyo club with their own wild hybrid of flamenco, funk-charged bass lines, rumba, lounge, rock and hip-hop sprinkled over tasty world beats. And while the flamenco fusion outfit hails from the more northern and post-modern coast of Barcelona, its blend of traditional and 21st century song makes Ojos de Brujo yet another pearl in the treasured tradition of Spanish folk music.
