Jazz Festival: A master's new twist

(June 12, 2005) — Chick Corea is arguably the jazz world's most amazing chameleon.

A musical quick-change artist, Corea has spent the better part of 40 years moving effortlessly from one style to another. He was an early exponent of jazz fusion and later became a leader in both avant-garde and electronic jazz. He's had a long and felicitous flirtation with Spanish and Latin music — his most famous piece is called "Spain" — and he also loves Mozart.

"I can see why some people think my art has not developed, that it's just been a lot of fits and starts," says Corea, who headlines a concert Tuesday as part of the Rochester International Jazz Festival. "That's kind of true. My career has not been a straight line. But the reason I'm always trying new things is that it keeps me fresh. It keeps me interested in the music."
