IT'S pushing 20 years since their ubiquitous dancefloor hit Bamboléo announced the Gipsy Kings' ascension into the international mainstream, but - as evinced by a near-capacity turnout for this Monday-night show - they can still pull a crowd, and host a swinging party. Mind you, they would have had to be trying quite hard not to rock the house with eleven musicians onstage, centred on a seven-strong line-up of Franco-Spanish gypsy cousins from the same two famously musical clans, based around Arles and Montpelier, which originally gave rise to the group back in the 1970s.

Seven acoustic guitars, struck in that quickfire, flamenco-accented, flick/slap style that buoys the band's rhythmic momentum - and topped with some dazzling solos from lead player Tonino Baliardo - provided a resonant, rich-grained underlay to their instrumental sound, backed up with bass, drums, percussion and keyboards.
