Jose Porcel company dances traditional flamenco

WHETHER EXPRESSING the sorrow of separation, the frustration of exclusion or the joyfulness of first love, flamenco serves it with passion.

Ballet Flamenco Jose Porcel is making its Orange County Performing Arts Center debut Thursday through Saturday with a 90-minute program filled with pure flamenco.

While many companies and individual dancers are experimenting with fusing flamenco dance with the music of different cultures, Porcel and his troupe of 10 dancers, two singers and four musicians are traditionalists in the best sense of the word.

"In my heart I believe that what a person creates in their productions is a reflection of themselves," Porcel said. "Nearly all of the influences in my dance style have strong traditional flamenco backgrounds; this is why I follow the roots of flamenco."
