International and Ottmar Liebert just go together. Take his introduction to guitar, for instance.

"There was a program on German television, 'B Club,' and on that program I saw the Beatles, Jimi Hendrix, the Rolling Stones. That was around the last quarter of the '60s. I was fascinated by it," said the flamenco, etc. guitarist via cell phone after he cleared the border for a gig in Canada.

"I got a guitar when I was 11. When I was 12, I took guitar lessons. When I was 14, I was in a supermarket with my mother and there was a cutout bin of sale records. I bought a solo flamenco guitar record by Paco de Lucia."

Born in Cologne, Germany, to a Chinese-German father and a Hungarian mother, Liebert calls Santa Fe, N.M., home, but works the world as hard as he once worked the cutout bins.
