January 6, 2006 — Event organizers have invited some famous caballeros to Brownsville to perform classic canciones for the fifth anniversary of the University of Texas at Brownsville and Texas Southmost College’s arts and entertainment season.
The new season will kick off Thursday, Jan. 26, at the Jacob Brown Auditorium with the New Gene Krupa Orchestra, followed by Paco Peña and his flamenco dance company on Feb 17. In later months, the Jacob Brown will play host to award-winning film and Broadway composer Marvin Hamlisch, internationally known music trio Los Panchos and ‘60s pop hit maker Burt Bacharach.
“We decided that, since the musical lineup this year all happen to be gentlemen that our theme would be ‘Canciones y Caballeros,’" said Peter Ruiz, director of the Fort Brown Memorial Center, which houses the Jacob Brown. “We wanted a whole other feeling for this year, since it is the fifth anniversary season. We had done musicals, ice shows and ballets, but this season needed to sit on a certain level.”
Ruiz and the FBMC’s advisory group have designated different colors for audience members to wear at each event.
“The colors add a little note of celebration to the season,” Ruiz said.
