Those searching for flamenco puro did not find it with Compañia Rafaela Carrasco, nor in her remarkable year-old show, "Una Mirada al Flamenco."

But flamenco purists – who are not necessarily the same breed as those seeking the old-fashioned dance – found something rarer in Carrasco. She and her company of four dancers and seven musicians and singers made their debut Friday at the Irvine Barclay Theatre.

Carrasco has hatched a profound reworking of flamenco's technique and conventions without sacrificing its mystique or, most importantly, its soul. A singularly expressive dancer, Carrasco was not about facile gimmickry; no one stamped walking canes, as Sara Baras' company did last year at UCLA.
