Just as heavily influenced by Paco De Lucia as they are Metallica, these two Dublin-based Mexican guitar prodigies have found their niche. Rodrigo Y Gabriela’s self-titled sophomore release (due October 3 in America), produced by John Leckie (Radiohead), shot straight to #1 in Ireland, beating out Johnny Cash to become the first instrumental album ever to top the Irish charts. Speaking in the most unlikely of Mexican-Irish accents, the enchanting Gabriela can’t believe how far the band has come since quitting their metal band in Mexico City: “When we switched the electric guitars for the gypsy guitars we had no expectations what so ever…our super goal was to become background musicians, earn some money playing in hotels, weddings, whatever. We didn’t really want to pursue that dream of becoming famous; it sounded so bullshit to us at the time. We wanted basically to travel the world and that’s what we did.”
