A battle is raging in the world of flamenco that is almost as passionate as Spain's most quintessential art form.

The sponsors of Madrid's long-running Flamenco festival are furious at the arrival of a rival organisation that they fear will steal the limelight.

The Festival Flamenco Caja Madrid is a private initiative that has been running each January for 15 years, consistently bringing the top names in the genre to Madrid's Teatro Albéniz.

But it is likely to be overshadowed this year by the arrival of a new festival from Andalusia, the birthplace and cultural centre of the art, which aims to return flamenco to its roots.
