Ensemble Espanol steams in 'Flamenco Passion'
February 12, 2007
BY HEDY WEISS Dance Critic
The temperature outside the Auditorium Theatre was decidedly arctic on Saturday night. But inside, where Libby Komaiko's Ensemble Espanol Spanish Dance Theater was performing its altogether fabulous "Flamenco Passion" program, it was easy to imagine you were in a sun-drenched city -- Seville, Malaga, Cadiz -- in the Andalusian region of Spain.
This Chicago company (resident artists at Northeastern Illinois University) has never looked more ravishing. Dancing for a packed house, the group demonstrated that they know just how to turn up the heat. The lavish concert -- a centerpiece of the Chicago Flamenco Festival 2007, running through Feb. 25 -- was a whirlwind of dance, live music, even a touch of Picasso's fractured, playful eroticism.
