Noche Flamenca company reflects artistry, history

Even if Noche Flamenca didn't have a strong international following, it would be a natural for Central Florida Cultural Endeavors' Encore Series, which is bringing the Spanish company back on Sunday.

"It was one of the most popular programs at the 2005 Florida International Festival," said Eric Lariviere, general manager of CFCE, the festival's producer.

"What's really good about this company is that they capture the authenticity of the flamenco form, but also are very good at staging their performance and leaving room for improvisation."

The Madrid-based ensemble was founded in 1993 by choreographer Martin Santangelo and his wife, Soledad Barrio. Both are serious, dedicated artists.

"They came up with Noche Flamenca because they wanted to dance together," said company manager Carlos Perez Vega. "And they wanted to present flamenco in the purest state."

Noche Flamenca performs the most traditional, least commercial flamenco, he said.
