Entrevista a Manuela Carrasco: Manuela Carrasco premieres with her new production "Romalí"

"Flamenco’s roots are in India"

Manuela Carrasco

The great dancer Manuela Carrasco premiered with her new show "Romalí", which in caló (the language of the gipsys’) means gipsy dance, in Madrid, as part of the Andalusian Flamenco Festival. Her new production, delves into the origins of the common past shared by Andalucía and India. To this end the virtuoso gipsy dancer shares the stage with the Indian Khatak dancer Maha Akhtar and Indian musicians. The similarities between these two dances are made obvious by this “pure” production that moves from the past to the present and travels musically between Rajastán and Andalucía and where the dance and song of both regions go hand in hand. Manuela Carrasco, talks to us about "Romalí" and her personal quest in search of flamenco’s roots.

What have you wanted to include in your new production, "Romalí"?

I am a purist dancer and have always liked to keep my performances pure on stage. Now I have found a more beautiful and gratifying motivation for showing the origins of flamenco dance. We gipsies are descended from India and their music is the music we used to play in the past.
