Legendary flamenco guitarist Paco de Lucia is to re-unite with Ankara music enthusiasts after a hiatus of 20 years. He will perform in Ankara on April 6 as part of the 24th Ankara International Music Festival, organized by the Sevda Cenap And Music Foundation (SCAMV).

The foundation has been organizing the festival for 24 years with the theme �spring in Ankara is more beautiful with music� and, scheduled for April 4-30, this year's festival will again feature a rich and colorful program including orchestras, chamber orchestras, flamenco, jazz, baroque concerts and artists from 13 different countries.

La Universidad gradúa al Flamenco en la figura de Paco de Lucía

El guitarrista algecireño más universal, Paco de Lucía, volvió a demostrar ayer la profunda admiración y respeto que despierta entre sus innumerables admiradores. Ayer fue su gran día porque, como el mismo confesó, su investidura como Doctor Honoris Causa por la Universidad de Cádiz (UCA) es el reconocimiento más especial de los tantos que ha recibido a lo largo de su trayectoria. El flamenco se pudo escribir con mayúsculas gracias al guitarrista en el solemne acto que tuvo lugar en la Escuela Politécnica Superior de Algeciras y se acercó, un poco más, a la universidad. La tarde no sólo fue de Lucía, sino de todos los flamencos andaluces.

La Coral Universitaria abrió el acto de investidura con el Canticorum para preceder la entrada del homenajeado, lo que provocó, inevitablemente, un inmediato y rotundo aplauso de las más de 400 personas que quisieron compartir la designación del algecireño.

Seguidamente, el rector de la Universidad gaditana, Diego Sales, declaró abierta la sesión con la que Francisco Sánchez Gómez, Paco de Lucía, pasó a convertirse en Doctor Honoris Causa. Una decisión que fue tomada por el Claustro de la Universidad en octubre de 2005 y que, ayer, fue materializada desde la más sincera devoción de todos los presentes.

The breathtaking moments in Paco de Lucía’s sold-out concert on Saturday night came early and often. Presented by Carnegie Hall in conjunction with the World Music Institute and and the yearly Flamenco Festival, the evening showcased Mr. de Lucía, the flamenco guitar legend, with as many as six other musicians in various formations. But first there was an expanse of stage and, seated at the center of it, just the headliner, intense, unsmiling and alone.

Forgoing both fanfare and strict tempo, Mr. de Lucía opened with a calmly sorrowful rondeña. His fingers flickered over his instrument’s nylon strings, in a spidery movement. He was eliciting a spectrum of singing tonalities from his guitar, while bringing space and silence into the equation. As an interaction with the instrument — and only implicitly the spellbound audience — it was a masterful, gemlike performance.

Is there any music in the world more sensual, more hot-blooded, more searingly human than flamenco? Anyone who heard guitarist Paco de Lucía at Lisner Auditorium on Friday night would be hard-pressed to say anything but no. For more than two hours, de Lucía unleashed a firestorm of Andalusian passion on the sold-out house -- an eloquent and wildly exciting performance that showed why he ranks among the world's greatest guitarists.

It was a spectacular launch to George Washington University's seventh annual Flamenco Festival, which continues with performances all week. Opening with a solo "Rodena" -- an introspective work that erupts into sudden dramatic flourishes and sweeping runs -- de Lucía explored a range of his pioneering "new flamenco" compositions, as well as more traditional works.

nueva york- El Flamenco Festival en Nueva York se ha convertido en un actividad más en la ciudad. Que si apertura de temporada en el Metropolitan, que si Festival Internacional de Literatura, que si Festival de Cine. Y ahí se ha hecho un hueco el flamenco en una urbe donde, sólo si se cuentan las buenas, hay tres o cuatro propuestas culturales cada día. El sábado fue el turno del maestro de la guitarra Paco de Lucía, que hizo vibrar el Carnegie Hall. Fueron dos horas de bulerías, alegrías, una rondeña, una soleá, una minera, entre otras, para las dos mil personas que abarrotaron el teatro neoyorquino y que hicieron regresar al gaditano para un «bis». El guitarrista de Cádiz se hizo de rogar, pero entonces, el público empezó a zapatear. Y fue cuando el maestro volvió al escenario.
-¿Cómo está después de un concierto como éste?-Tengo los dedos como porras, me duelen mucho. Al principio me ha costado acostumbrarme a la sonoridad clásica de la sala pero luego todo ha ido bien.
-¿En qué piensa cuando toca?

For a sheer adrenaline rush, there are few musical spectacles more charged than a virtuoso unleashed.
Spanish guitarist Paco de Lucia provided exactly that rush Thursday night at the Orpheum - for nearly two hours.
Sitting center stage surrounded in a wide semicircle by his band, the flamenco legend commanded the spotlight in every imaginable setting - solo, duet, with singers, with full band - with the same results: staggeringly soulful explorations that left an intent listener close to drained.
The crowded house rewarded de Lucia with an extended standing ovation at the end, the perfect kickoff for World Music’s Flamenco Festival 2007, which continues through tomorrow night at the Cutler Majestic Theatre, where the CompaniaRafaela Carrasco dancers make their Boston debut.
