Seville's flamenco dancers

I was eight years old when my father returned from a Spanish holiday on crutches after trying to impersonate a flamenco dancer in a Seville nightclub.

He'd been on the old vino tinto and, having consumed far too much, he made the wrong move and broke his ankle.

I've been fascinated with the art of flamenco ever since. And, captivated by the great Eva Yerbabuena at last year's Sadler's Wells Flamenco Festival, I've come to Seville – spiritual home of the dance, which is a fusion of cultures from when Arabic Spain was under Muslim domination.

Taking steps
Mindful of dad's experience, I've decided the best route to learning is with a couple of classes at Taller Flamenco – one of the city's schools.

But it's not as easy as I'd hoped and I've just about mastered las palmas (or getting my hands to clap in time).

THE search for pure flamenco was worth it, writes Daniel Hipgrave as women in swirling dresses slam their high heels onto the tables.

THE sangria seemed endless, women danced in flowing dresses, aggressively slamming their high heels on to the tables in a sexually provocative manner.

I could just make out through the smoky atmosphere two lank-haired men on stools in the corner strumming their guitars with such electrifying pace and rhythm it was hard to see the movement of their hands.

The floor was sticky, the place dingy, the atmosphere that of rancid stale alcohol.

SEVILLE, Spain April 27-May 2

Seville goes all out for its Feria de Abril , this year April 27 to May 2. The fair, which started in 1847 as a livestock exhibition, features a wild explosion of flamenco dancing, bullfighting, elaborate costumes, music, and parties in striped canvas tents. It wouldn't be a fair without food. Besides the fare from local taverns, Spanish omelets, and fried fish, the special treat s are "buñuelos," soft doughnut-like pastries made and sold by gypsy families in the Plaza de las Buñoleras del Real .

(noticia) Hoy la bailaora Matilde Coral se reúne con Educación para solucionar los problemas de su escuela de danza

La bailaora sevillana Matilde Coral se reunirá hoy con el director general de Planificación y Centros de la Consejería de Educación, Manuel Alcaide, para intentar resolver los problemas de su escuela de danza, prorrogándole el permiso para seguir impartiendo el grado medio de danza española, mientras la Consejería de Cultura y el Ayuntamiento hispalense le preparan una nueva sede en el barrio de Triana.

El encuentro, que se producirá en Torretriana, según informaron fuentes de la administración, servirá para estudiar una solución y evitar el cierre del centro, que lleva funcionando desde hace 40 años, pero que desde que en 2004 se quedó sin el reconocimiento oficial de la Junta, por faltarle 500 metros cuadrados de espacio, ha ido perdiendo alumnos, hasta quedarse sin tres cuartas partes de sus estudiantes.

"La danza es hacer sentir algo a los demás, muy en su interior", afirma Cristina Hoyos en su libro. Y esa capacidad de hacer sentir, de moverse con magia, de actuar con duende que tiene la bailaora, le ha servido para publicar una obra escrita sobre su experiencia con el cáncer. Hace casi 10 años, el 1 de diciembre de 1996, Cristina Hoyos se encontró un bulto en un pecho y, tras hacerse unas pruebas, le diagnosticaron cáncer de mama.

Tuvo que pasar por quirófano, se le cayó el pelo, se sometió a un largo tratamiento de recuperación. Pero ella reconoce que desde el principio tuvo una cosa muy clara: que nada iba a hacer que dejara de bailar. La enfermedad cogió por sorpresa a Cristina, pero también a toda su familia, y cuando se le pregunta si se sintió sobreprotegida por los suyos contesta: "¿Sobreprotección? ¡Si era yo quien les protegía!".
