Like most flamenco, Noche Flamenca is passionate, dramatic and intense.

But there is more in less to the award-winning Spanish dance troupe. Noche Flamenca is committed to presenting flamenco in its purest form.

The dance company performs at 8 p.m. today at the Scottsdale Center for the Performing Arts.

"The show is very stripped-down flamenco. Down to its essence," said Martin Santangelo, artistic director for the dance company. "There are no tricks, no gimmicks as far as big lighting, sets or dazzle. At the same time we do a very theatrical production."

Noche Flamenca, founded in Madrid in 1993, will feature three dancers, three singers and two guitar players.

Strictly Spanish Dancing

The flamboyant sounds and rhythms of Flamenco are coming to Viva España this year for the first ever Strictly Spanish Dancing Competition judged by TV favourite and Latin American expert Brendan Cole.

Flamenco has been described as one of the fiercest expressions of the human spirit and the result is an adventure with extreme dance, searing vocal artistry and exhilarating guitar.

Contestants will bare their souls in the knockout rounds on Friday 16th and Saturday 17th March, competing to make it through to the finals on Sunday 17th March when they will have three minutes to impress the Strictly Spanish Dancing panel of judges.

Vietnam, flamenco spice dance melting pot

There was a great deal of cultural cross-pollination on the Chicago dance front this weekend.

Arriving first, at the Dance Center of Columbia College, was the Together Higher Dance Troupe of Hanoi, Vietnam. The company blends aspects of contemporary Western modern dance with a strong Eastern design sensibility. It also plays with a great many lighting tricks that serve as cues and are a reminder that most of the dancers onstage are either deaf or hearing-impaired. (This fact would have been all but undetectable were it not mentioned in the program.)

The sole offering by Together Higher was "Stories of Us," an 80-minute work by the company's artistic director, Le Vu Long, who spent years with the Vietnam National Opera and Ballet and also worked in France before starting this troupe.
