Ricardo Diaz has played flamenco guitar all over the world -- even in China -- and believes people are increasingly warming up to the Spanish art form.

"Flamenco is very, very popular right now," said Diaz in an interview from Calgary, where he was preparing for a concert in Canmore. "It is still an up and coming art in the west."

Flamenco may not have the "international strength" of opera or ballet, but Diaz believes it will someday match those forms for interest.

Recently, flamenco schools have begun to pop up everywhere, including in Calgary.

"It's not mainstream, but it is . . . a subculture," he said. (leer +)
