(link) In her solo show, Amaya gives flamenco the silent treatment

It is 9 a.m. -- not the favorite time of day for flamenco dancers, who often don't begin performing for another 15 hours or so.

"The good shows start after midnight. The tourist shows start at 8," says Omayra Amaya, talking by phone from New York at 9 a.m. sharp. The program her Omayra Amaya Flamenco Dance Company performs at the Copley Theatre tomorrow night will start at 8. But you could hardly consider it "touristy."
For one thing, she's choreographed a work inspired by John Cage, whose aesthetic is 180 degrees away from traditional flamenco. Cage is all about restraint; flamenco is all about lack thereof. The connecting thread is improvisation. (leer +)
