When the flamenco dancer kicks up her skirt and grasps its frills to her waist, it's so you can see the fire of her footwork. If you know the compás -- the time or rhythm she is stomping -- you know whether she is dancing a bulería, a fandango, a soleá, an alegría, or a rumba. Flamenco is a precise language spoken by the body to articulate the soul. And sometimes flamenco is a way of life from which there is no escape.
