The Canada Council has honoured many dance professionals across the country with the Jacqueline Lemieux Prize, but for the first time in 25 years, a flamenco dancer will receive the annual honour.

The council announced Wednesday that Vancouver-based flamenco artist Oscar Nieto is the 2005 recipient of the award, valued at $6,000 and presented to the applicant deemed most deserving by a peer assessment committee judging the council's Grants to Dance Professionals program.

The U.S.-born Nieto "has kept his foot on the pulse of flamenco development and also kept his students abreast of these new developments," the selection committee said in a statement.
