Chick Corea: 'Rhumba Flamenco'
When I spent the summer in Francisco Franco’s Spain in 1974, I had the opportunity to hear some of the world’s great flamenco guitarists in concert. Since that time, I’ve heard a lot more great flamenco guitarists on albums.
But Chick Corea’s the only pianist I’ve ever heard who could play the music so fluently. As I read on one flamenco Web site, Corea “speaks flamenco.”
“Rhumba Flamenco,” a two-disc CD available only through Corea’s Web site, is a beautiful live set that features songs from throughout Corea’s career. Not all of the songs are flamencos or rhumbas, but they’re all informed by the music and influenced by Corea’s outstanding bandmates.
