When he was 5 years old, Israel Galván's father would pull him out of bed at his home in Seville, Spain, at 3 a.m. to dance for guests. The young Spaniard was called to execute his show-stopping zapateo at every hour and occasion imaginable for he was doubly blessed (or cursed): He had a prodigious talent for flamenco and his parents were famous dancers and teachers.

Accomplished guitarist and composer José Luis Rodriguez, who was musical director for the legendary Compania Cristina Hoyos for several years, knows these stories as part of Seville's flamenco lore. He's also had the opportunity to watch firsthand the transformation of Israel Galván, who performs in Miami on Saturday, into one of flamenco's most important avant-garde dancers.
