Strange coincidence: While the world celebrates the birth of Mozart, 250 years ago in Salzburg, another important musical occasion transpired around the same time. In Spain, the first schools devoted to flamenco were established in the southern province of Andalusia.

Though flamenco has its roots much further in the past, scholars believe the Cartas Marruecas, published in 1774, contains the first written reference to the form. It records the birth of the first schools, beginning in 1765, in the cities of Cadiz, Jerez and Seville. So while little Wolfgang was writing his first symphonies, the institutionalization of what would eventually become Spain's national art form had already begun.
