Flamenco would seem the least likely of dance forms to be characterized as inaccessible or aloof. That's Butoh's reputation. But flamenco? Its heritage traces to the Spanish Gypsies, and its temperament runs hot. A raw extension of guitar and vocal cante, it's meant to grab the lapels of fusty technique and shake loose unbridled emotion -- lament, defiance, passion.

Ballet Flamenco Eva Yerbabuena offers a different breed of flamenco. Yerbabuena, the company's namesake and obvious star, favors a less-is-more aesthetic: stark solos, little interplay with her musicians and fellow dancers, dances stripped of the overwrought melodrama and showboat antics that plague so many star-studded tours.
