ASHLAND -- The Paramount Arts Center has just the thing to heat up a cold January night.
The Flamenco group ... al Sur and the Louisville Orchestra will take the stage at the Ashland landmark at 7 p.m. Friday. The evening will be a Latin-infused combination of dance, vocals and instrumentals.
Al Sur is a music/dance ensemble specializing in the performance of original and traditional Spanish Flamenco rooted in the Andalusian gypsy tradition. Most musical numbers are original works composed by the ensemble.
"This concert should appeal to audiences in several different ways. Of course, the obvious is hearing the Louisville Orchestra live in concert ... a spectacular event in itself," said Gareth Jones, guitarist for al Sur. "This is some exciting, passionate music that, for me, usually evokes the feeling of being someplace warm and sunny. Now, take that same kind of passion and excitement and put a flamenco quartet in front -- a guitar, some percussion, a double bass ... and focus that sound through one of the most original flamenco choreographers and dancers in the world at the front of the stage."
