WELL-HEELED: Alison Cowan shows her skill in the Spanish Flamenco dance she will perform on stage at Race Unity Day on Sunday.

A plethora of dance styles will be on show at this Sunday's Race Unity Day in Victory Square Park. Kiran Chug speaks to some of the performers and discovers that fancy footwork and balancing acts are simply expressions of an international language.

Flicking her wrists, tapping her heels and rolling her shoulders, Alicia Cortez is used to captivating her audiences. In a blood red blouse, twirling black skirt and dangling gold earrings, there is little to suggest she is anything other than a traditional Spanish flamenco dancer.

But after the show, she wipes away the make-up, changes her clothes, and becomes Alison Cowan again - a Nelson woman who sits at a desk in a government department office for most of the week.
