In the Mood for Festivals at Jazz at Lincoln Center

A theme of romance threads through the 2007-8 season for Jazz at Lincoln Center, Wynton Marsalis, its artistic director, said in an interview yesterday.

Another theme, though unstated, might be consolidation. The schedule for the season, from October to May, promises more of what has worked before: festival programming by coordinating the booking of Rose Hall’s three performance spaces; a concert by the audience favorites Dave Brubeck and Ramsey Lewis; the return of the ever-popular Duke Ellington to the repertory rotation; more concerts of Afro-Cuban, Spanish, and Brazilian jazz hybrids; and a few landmark concerts stemming from the gospel tradition, which seem likely to generate audience interest. (...)

Also in April, Wynton Marsalis and the Spanish pianist Chano Dominguez will reprise “De Cadiz a New Orleans,” a jazz-flamenco work written by Mr. Dominguez and presented in 2003. Mr. Marsalis said that it deserved a better performance and a better hearing, as well as a live recording.

NEW YORK, NY -- (MARKET WIRE) -- 02/21/07 -- The seventh annual "Flamenco Festival New York 2007" showcases two of Andalucia's extraordinary performing arts festivals, both of which are biennial (every two years).

This Saturday, February 24, at NYU Skirball Center for the Performing Arts, "Malaga en Flamenco" previews its second biennial festival to be held August 27 to September 23, 2007. Twenty-five artists from Malaga, including evocative singer Rocio Bazan, will thrill a New York audience with their regional flamenco art forms including festive "verdiales" (colorful folkloric groups from the verdial olive-growing countryside), spirited "malagueñas" and "fandangos," and Malaga-inspired works by legendary composers Isaac Albeniz and Ramon Montoya.

Books of The Times. In the Land of Flamenco, Civil War’s Buried Bones

Californians learn not to think about the San Andreas fault. Otherwise, who could summon the nerve to walk out the front door? In Spain, an entire nation has learned how not to address a historical fault line that shifted just 70 years ago, setting one half of the country against the other in a murderous furor that paved the way for 30 years of military dictatorship. Spain, the 19th-century writer Ángel Ganivet wrote, “is a cage full of madmen all suffering from the same manía: their inability to put up with one another.” The Spanish Civil War and Franco’s regime seemed to confirm the thesis.

Today, a little more than 30 years after Franco’s death, Spain might well be the happiest country in Europe, with a robust democracy, a booming economy, dazzling new architectural trophies and a health-care system that can take credit for Europe’s longest-lived citizens. The uneasy secret behind the miraculous shifting of gears known as la Transición (“the Transition”) is an unspoken pact to let the past alone, what one member of Parliament has called “forgetting by everyone for everyone.”

At Flamenco Gala, Youth Is Served

Dance

By JOY GOODWIN
February 21, 2007

At the opening of the New York Flamenco Festival at City Center, neither the staccato rat-atat of heels, the parade of colorful costumes, nor two exciting debuts could offset the creeping fatigue. Six soloists took the stage during an evening that ran so long that it basically skipped its culminating fin de fiesta.

Nonetheless, the debuts of Olga Pericet and Manuel Liñán were stunners. From the moment Ms. Pericet strode onstage for her first American "Cantiñas," she held the audience rapt. Her bright, mischievous eyes sparkled above her strikingly beautiful gown. That dress — a pink and rose confection that fell to the floor like a carpet of petals — proved to be both flash and substance. Midway through the number, she bounced the skirt's long train around, whipped it into the air with a flick of her hips, and reached out a hand and caught it — a trick as impressive as it was sweet. "Señorita, eh!" murmured one of the singers approvingly.

With her youthful verve and her ready smile, Ms. Pericet was nothing like those great ladies of flamenco who, ripened by age, suggest incalculable depths of earthy experience. Some of her steps were like fun party moves, others like athletic feats. Occasionally, a charming shrug or a graceful turn appeared like a little fillip. She marched around a bit, like a child queen, and when she was finished, she blew a kiss on her way to the wings.
