FOR THE REGISTER-PAJARONIAN

Our area's Flamenco Society of San Jose presented a sensational concert of Gypsy Flamenco music, dance and singing direct from Spain at the Carriage House at Villa Montalvo on May 27 and May 28. The group, Raices del Flamenco (Roots of Flamenco), consisted of world renown Gypsy dancer Concha Vargas Torres, the spectacular Flamenco sensation Paco Fernandez, Flamenco singer Paco de Leon, Flamenco dancer and teacher Rubina Valenzuela and Chus Alonso on cajon, flute and palmas (hand clapping). The show was simply spectacular!

Torres was born into a Gypsy family in Labrija, Spain. At an early age, she was surrounded by the music of the great Gypsy Flamenco artists of the day and directly related to the great Pinini and Penas Gypsy families. Torres a has toured Europe and the Americas as a soloist and also as partner with the great Mario Maya and El Guito. She has performed for Pope John Paul II and Indira Ghandi.
