When most folks hear the term ``fandango,'' they think of Queen's ever-popular song ``Bohemian Rhapsody.'' Thursday night at the Cutler Majestic Theatre, however, the audience had the chance to see what a real Spanish fandango looks like, danced fiercely by young Carlos Rodriguez.
As he demonstrated command of the form, Rodriguez was dressed entirely in white, part of an attempt to represent through dance the concept of ``air.'' Yes, that probably sounds more like something one might encounter at a bad modern dance recital. But along with Rocio Molina (``water''), Alejandro Granados (``earth'') and the legendary Carmen Cortes (``fire''), Rodriguez delivered a thrilling entertainment called ``The Four Elements'' that is also a decisive artistic turning point in contemporary flamenco.
Now in its sixth year, World Music's annual Flamenco Festival continues to prove that flamenco is a rapidly developing form, infused with elements from the classic American modern dance, contemporary German dance theater and even hip-hop. In past years there were the divided camps of the traditionalists (offering what they call ``pure'' flamenco) and experimenters such as Maria Pages, who recently used music by Louis Armstrong for her choreography.
