Westchester Arts & Entertainment NewsPurchase, NY - Rafaela Carrasco, one of the most important flamenco choreographers of her generation, is bringing her acclaimed new show, Una Mirada al Flamenco (A Look at Flamenco), to The Performing Arts Center Purchase College on Thursday, Feb. 15.
Tickets to the show, at 8 p.m., are $40 and $30.
Like the other shows in the World Stage Series at The Center this season -- themed “Crossing Borders, Blurring Boundaries” -- the flamenco show celebrates the rich culture and tradition of other lands and peoples. Here, Compañia Rafaela Carrasco’s production blends Andalucian roots with jazz and contemporary influences. With a company of four dancers and seven musicians and singers, Una Mirada al Flamenco explores new concepts of what flamenco means to a 21st century woman - while maintaining the essence and integrity of flamenco.
Critics of flamenco dance praised the show as “a fascinating new vision of flamenco performance” with “impeccable choreography that offers a new model for translating an intimate art form to a large audience.” One critic added, “Rafaela Carrasco’s original choreography embraces refined movement, sophisticated lighting and haunting musical threads, pushing boundaries so strikingly original, they defy categorization.”
