'Shut your mouth' - it's more than just stamping feet
Al-Bustan's musical journey through Spain arrives in a modern space

BEIT MERY: Much of the audience was still filing into the Emile Bustani auditorium when Marco Flores made his presence known on stage. His unaccompanied flamenco dance solo erupted from the dimly lit stage and continued for a few minutes while ushers hurried to corral the stragglers to their seats at the front of the hall.
He paused, then, raised his index finger to his lips and hissed, "Shhhh!"
Al-Bustan Festival has chosen a Spanish theme this year, so it's no surprise a portion of its concert program be devoted to flamenco. The Paco Pena Flamenco Company provided several variations on a theme of the mainstream form, while Ensemble Badila presented a show dedicated to the Indian and Iranian antecedents of a form considered quintessentially Spanish and characteristically gypsy.
Saturday evening witnessed a modern variation with "Chanta la Mui" (literally "Shut your mouth" in Romani), an entertaining triptych of flamenco-inspired contemporary dance pieces featuring Flores and his fellow dancer-choreographers Olga Pericet and Daniel Dona.
