A year ago, local dance company Bailes Ferrer transformed its occasional weekend workshop into "Flamenco in the Sun," a summer event that allowed instructors, performers and enthusiasts from around the country to converge on South Florida to celebrate their passion for the dance.
Now Flamenco in the Sun, in only its second year, has grown to compete with other well-established festivals around the country.
Bailes Ferrer joined forces with Miami-Dade College's Cultural Affairs Department and FUNDarte to create a festival that has expanded to include more workshops for students of all levels and ages in both Broward and Miami-Dade counties.
The festival kicks off Saturday and runs through Aug. 21, featuring performances by international flamenco masters, who will also teach the workshops.
Michelle Heffner-Hayes, executive director of the Cultural Affairs Department, says they envisioned an event that was similar to festivals taking place around the nation. But they were also seeking innovation.
